Ever spotted a cavity in a tooth? Cavities can occur in all shapes and sizes. Occasionally the cavity will extend deeper into the chamber of the tooth where nerves and blood vessels are located (the pulp chamber). This can lead to persistent pain and sensitivity and needs intervention by the dentist to resolve.
Root canal treatment is a procedure where the cleaning of the tooth structure is extended deeper into what is known as the pulp chamber, and into the roots of the teeth. The dentist instruments and removes the infected blood vessels and nerves, and later either seals it completely or leaves an antiseptic paste in there for a few days to chemically clean the area. This difference in treatment is the basis of the “single-visit” and “multiple visit” root canal treatment.
The successful root canal subsides the pain, removes infected tissues and restores the tooth function after carefully planned restorations.
